Made in Hobart, the Propeller Blossom Pendant is a sculptural lighting piece featuring eight elegantly curved blades in natural Tasmanian Eucalypt. Designed by Duncan Meerding, it debuted at Euroluce in Milan in 2019, showcasing his distinctive approach to light and form. Shaped by his vision impairment, Meerding’s work explores the sensory interplay between structure, shadow, and illumination. When lit, the pendant creates a dynamic interaction of light and shadow, enhancing its surroundings.
Duncan shares: "The relationship between light and shadow and light dispersion are integral to my design process. Being legally blind with less than 5% of my sight remaining, the vision of light emanating from the peripheries of the different objects, reflect the alternative sensory world within which I design."
Each piece is crafted using a combination of hand-driven and computer-aided techniques. The eight timber blades slot into a custom aluminium bracket, held by a discreet 'T-Block' clamping system, and are finished with a turned Tasmanian Blackwood nose cone cap. It arrives with a 2m black cloth electrical cord, a thin woven stainless suspension wire, a black ceiling rose, and a detailed instruction sheet.
Designed as a flat-pack system to reduce environmental impact and shipping costs, the Propeller Blossom Pendant is a bold and thoughtful centrepiece for larger interior spaces.
