Frequent Questions about Bathroom Lighting

Great bathroom lighting relies on layering multiple light types. You should combine general bathroom lighting (typically LED downlights that evenly illuminate the entire space) with task lighting around the vanity for grooming activities. Bathroom wall lights are ideal for mirror areas, as positioning them at eye level on either side prevents unflattering shadows.

IP (Ingress Protection) ratings are mandatory for bathroom lighting in Australia, and the required rating depends on which zone your fixture is in. Zone 0 (inside the bath or shower) requires a minimum IP67 rating, while Zone 1 (above the bath or shower up to 2.25m) and Zone 2 (the perimeter zone) require at least IPx4 — though IPx5 is recommended. Always check the product specifications before purchasing any bathroom lights to ensure compliance with Australian safety standards.

For the most flattering and functional result, bathroom wall lights should be positioned at eye level on either side of the mirror. This placement ensures even light distribution across your face, eliminating the shadows that downlights positioned behind you can cause. Avoid placing your primary task lighting overhead or directly behind you, as this creates unflattering shadows — particularly problematic when applying makeup or shaving.

Yes — dimmers are highly recommended for bathroom lighting. They give you full control over the atmosphere, allowing you to switch between bright, practical task lighting during the day and a soft, spa-like ambience in the evening. Just ensure any dimmer switches you choose are compatible with your specific LED fittings and comply with Australian electrical regulations.

Bathroom lighting should be planned as early as possible — ideally before your builder begins the fitout. Australia's strict electrical zoning regulations mean that features like bathroom wall lights, pendant fixtures, or LED strip lighting can be very difficult (and costly) to add after cabinetry, plumbing, and power points are already in place. It's strongly recommended to consult a certified electrician early in the process to ensure your lighting plan is safe, compliant, and seamlessly integrated into your bathroom design.
