It depends on how exposed the location is. As a general benchmark for the Australian climate, a minimum of IP44 is recommended for exterior lighting in protected spots like covered decks, porches, and under eaves. For fully exposed exterior lights in gardens, pathways, or open areas, a minimum of IP55 is recommended to handle dust and direct water jets. Always consult your electrician before purchasing, as they can confirm the right rating for your specific home and environment.

Exterior wall lights are versatile and suit a range of locations — from building facades and entrances to alfresco areas and eaves. The key is matching the fixture's IP rating to the level of exposure at that spot.
