Frequently Asked Questions About Brass

Brass is an alloy made primarily of copper and zinc, which provides a versatile range of shades from warm golden hues to cooler silvery tones depending on the exact composition. In contrast, bronze is an alloy consisting of copper and tin, which typically results in a darker, richer reddish-brown colour. Both materials are highly durable, but brass is particularly celebrated for its bright, reflective properties when first crafted.

As brass is exposed to air and moisture, it naturally undergoes a chemical process called oxidation. This process causes a protective layer known as a patina to develop on the surface of the metal over time. The natural patina alters the original lustre, gradually shifting the colour and adding a unique, aged character to the lighting fixture while shielding it from further corrosion.

Lacquered brass features a delicate clear varnish applied over the metal to protect the surface and retain its original, polished lustre for an extended period. Unlacquered brass is left completely bare and will acquire a natural patina much more swiftly as it reacts with the surrounding environment. The choice between the two finishes depends entirely on whether a pristine, shiny appearance or an organic, aged aesthetic is desired for the space.

Brass is highly prized for its exceptional durability and strong resistance to corrosion, tarnishing, and general wear. The inherent copper-zinc composition creates a robust structure that effectively withstands moisture, humidity, and salty air without deteriorating. This makes solid brass light fixtures an ideal and long-lasting choice for both interior spaces and demanding exterior environments.

To preserve the natural beauty and structural integrity of brass fittings, harsh cleaners and abrasive tools must be strictly avoided. The safest method for cleaning is to gently wipe the surface using mild soap, warm water, and a very soft cloth. Regular dusting and the prevention of excessive moisture build-up will help maintain the desired finish and ensure the brass ages gracefully.
