Pendant lights buyers guide — how to choose the right hanging light

Pendant lights do more than illuminate a room. They set the scale, the mood and often the character of a space — and getting them right means thinking about size, height, material and placement together.

This guide walks through everything you need to know before buying:

  • Types of pendant — from single shades and clusters to linears, chandeliers and lanterns, each suited to a different space and ceiling height
  • Sizing and hanging heights — a practical formula for choosing the right diameter, plus clear height guidelines for dining tables (700–800 mm above), kitchen islands (700–850 mm above) and open living areas (minimum 2100 mm from the floor)
  • Materials and styles — glass, ceramic, rattan, timber, linen, concrete and stone each produce a different quality of light and suit different interiors
  • Room-by-room guidance — kitchen islands, dining rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, outdoor areas, entries and staircases each covered separately

The standard recommendation for pendant lighting over a dining table is to hang the bottom of the shade 700–800 mm above the table surface. This keeps the pendant light within the visual field of seated diners without obstructing sightlines across the table.
