Frequent questions about Outdoor Lighting

An IP (Ingress Protection) rating is a two-digit code that tells you how well an exterior light is protected against dust and moisture. The first digit covers solid particles and the second covers water — so an IP65 rating, for example, means the fixture is fully dust-tight and protected against water jets. Understanding IP ratings is essential when choosing outdoor lights, as it ensures your fixtures can safely handle the conditions of their specific location.

It depends on how exposed the location is. As a general benchmark for the Australian climate, a minimum of IP44 is recommended for exterior lighting in protected spots like covered decks, porches, and under eaves. For fully exposed exterior lights in gardens, pathways, or open areas, a minimum of IP55 is recommended to handle dust and direct water jets. Always consult your electrician before purchasing, as they can confirm the right rating for your specific home and environment.

Exterior wall lights are versatile and suit a range of locations — from building facades and entrances to alfresco areas and eaves. The key is matching the fixture's IP rating to the level of exposure at that spot. For instance, exterior wall lights under eaves with limited overhead cover may face wind-driven rain, so an IP44+ rating is the minimum. In more sheltered positions like a deep covered porch, IP44 is generally sufficient, though higher-rated fittings are always a safer long-term choice.

Not on their own. IP ratings only measure protection against water and dust — they don't account for salt air. If your property is within 5km of the ocean, even highly rated outdoor lights can corrode over time if the materials aren't up to the task. For coastal homes, it's important to pair your IP-rated exterior lights with marine-grade materials such as solid brass, concrete, or 316 stainless steel, which are engineered to withstand the corrosive effects of a salty environment.

Three things matter most: IP rating, materials, and placement. Your exterior lights need an IP rating appropriate for their level of exposure to rain, wind, and humidity. If you're in a coastal zone, material selection is equally critical — opt for corrosion-resistant options like solid brass or 316 stainless steel. Finally, always consult a certified electrician before purchasing to confirm that the voltage, IP rating, and materials are all suitable for your specific outdoor spaces.
